Brazil has registered imports of 161,704 tons of agrochemicals during the first half of the year. The result has been an increase in external purchases of 19.2%, in comparison to the same period in 2015, according to data released by the National Union of the Crop Protection Industry (Sindiveg) during Expointer 2016.

Herbicides continue to be the most imported product in Brazil, reaching 111,858 tons in the first six months of 2016. Following though at lower levels are fungicides that registered imports of 29,013 tons between January and June of this year.

Thirdly, insecticides, were at 18,809 tons, which were acquired abroad by Brazilian purchasers in the first half of the year. The numbers indicate a fall of 63,78%, in comparison with the 29,490 imported in the same period in 2015.

Acaricides follow, with a lower volume being imported – as 1,512 tons were purchased abroad. Other categories include all other phytosanitary products, representing only 512 tons during the period.

“This significant fall is due to the irregularity or even the lack of rains in some regions, notably the Cerrado in the state of Mato Grosso, and the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia), forcing a reduction in the appearance  of plagues,” comments Silvia Fagnani, executive-director of Sindiveg. According to Fagnani, the sector of agrochemicals has also been hurt by products sold in illegal and clandestine markets.
