9th Brasil AgrochemShow: Brazilian agrochemical market needs more competition

The Brazilian market needs more competition to benefit the end consumer, according to consultant Flavio Hirata of Allier Brasil. To increase competition, it is necessary to speed up the procedures of evaluation and registration of new agrochemicals.

“Competition is beneficial for the customer because it eases and deregulates prices, offers credit, and forces improvements and innovation. It is fundamental for Brazil, because besides food, agriculture means revenue for the country. Speeding up registration will increase competitiveness, because it eases the entrance of new players into the market,” stated the expert.

According to Hirata, the access of newcomers is currently complicated because the major companies in the agchem sector impose “barriers.” “It requires exclusivity of distributors and available credit for customers,” he explained.

“The major barrier to accessing the Brazilian market of agrochemicals is the registration of new products because it is slow, demands high expenditure, and is unpredictable. On the other hand, this market is extremely attractive because it generates US$9 billion per year and has the potential to reach $16 billion in a few years; the margins are maintained at a very high level,” he added.
