By Think Real - According to the Forecast on Occurrence Trend of Armyworm released by the National Agro-Tech Extension and Service Center (NATESC) on 18 June, 2016, it is forecasted that the second-generation armyworm in 2016 will strike on a medium scale, as the first-generation armyworm in first year of 2016 occurred on a small scale in the Middle and Lower Reaches of Changjiang River, the wheat planting regions in Jianghuai and Huanghuai. After effective prevention and control, the left pest volume in local regions in China has been low and the accumulative armyworm attraction volume and egg volume in most regions are obviously lower than those in the same period in past years.

The area of wheat with the first-generation armyworm in the Middle and Lower Reaches of Changjiang River, Jianghuai and Huanghuai in 2016 is 426,666.7 ha, 58% and 30% less than those in 2014 and 2015. The national average armyworm volume per square meter is 1.7, 29% and 59% less than those in 2014 and 2015. After prevention and control, the average left armyworm volume in a variety of fields is 0.3 per square meter, 67% less than the average in 2014 and 2015.

Therefore, it is forecasted that the second-generation armyworm in 2016 will strike on a medium scale and high-density armyworm-stricken fields will occur in some regions in Inner Mongolia, Liaoning Province, Hebei Province and Shandong Province. It is predicted that the total occurrence area of the pest in China will be 2 million ha this year and the peak period of caterpillars will be from late June to early July.
