One of the country’s hybrid seed manufacturers, Monsanto Malawi, has introduced a new maize seed variety ideal for winter cropping.

Speaking during a tour of lead farmers in Chiradzulu, Zomba and Ntcheu districts, Monsanto sales officer for the southern Region, Dennis Kachikho, said the new variety DKC 8181, is aimed at supporting government efforts to encourage farmers to venture into winter cropping as a way of fighting hunger.

He said the seed will help in dealing with effects of climate change.

Kachikho said the company would like to see famers who use Monsanto products experience a difference.

“This variety can do well even in Nsanje and Chikwawa where rains have been problematic,” said Kachikho.

One of the farmers in Chiradzulu, Rajab Tawakali, said he planted Monsanto maize seed on December 20 and that the crop is now almost ready for harvest.

“I planted DKC 9089 and 8053 and you can see the good maize crop I have,” Tawakali said.

Another farmer Mizek Mudzaona of Galeta Village in Chief Njolomole’s area in Ntcheu, said since he started using Mosanto seed in 2009, he has never been disappointed.

“Before I started using Mosanto seed, I could only get 15 bags of maize. Today, I’m able to harvest 65 bags,” Mudzaona said.
