USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has made a preliminary decision not to regulate Syngenta's line of corn genetically engineered for both insect resistance and glufosinate-ammonium resistance (MZIR098).

The agency said its decision is “based on similarity to Pioneer's corn (event 4114) and other corn events which the agency previously reviewed and deregulated.

“We have prepared a preliminary determination with an accompanying plant pest risk similarity assessment (PPRSA) and a preliminary finding of no significant impact (FONSI),” APHIS said.

The documents will be available for a 30-day public comment period when the notice is published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

APHIS also has released a draft Environmental Assessment, preliminary FONSI, preliminary plant pest risk assessment (PPRA), and preliminary determination in response to a petition from Monsanto requesting deregulation of Monsanto corn (MON 87419) genetically engineered for resistance to the herbicides dicamba and glufosinate.

The notice announcing that preliminary determination is scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on Feb. 17, which will kick off a 30-day public comment period.
