Growers in Western Canada have better pre-seed burndown options for cereals, pulse crops and soybeans with the approvals for the active pyraflufen-ethyl and two new pre-formulated herbicides BlackHawk® and GoldWing™ . Pyraflufen is a novel new Group 14 active ingredient that is registered for pre-seed, non-residual control in many western crops including pulses, cereals and soybeans in Western Canada.

PMRA’s recent approval of additional crops such as lentils, field peas and canola, as well as expanding the usage to a rate range, has allowed Nufarm to introduce two new products to enhance pre-seed burndown. Pyraflufen is now available in a pre-formulation with BlackHawk and new GoldWing herbicides in Western Canada.

“Pre-seed burndown applications are a critical component of successful weed management programs,” says Graham Collier, Technical Services Manager for Western Canada with Nufarm Agriculture Inc. “Research has proven that early, enhanced weed control improves the yield potential of a crop by eliminating the competition for vital resources. Adding a brand new molecule in pyraflufen to our pre-seed burndown portfolio will provide prairie growers with an exciting new set of tools to manage their specific weed challenges in all of their crops – including herbicide-resistant weeds.”

BlackHawk herbicide is a newly registered, pre-formulated combination of pyraflufen plus 2,4-D, developed to be added to glyphosate prior to planting cereal crops (wheat, barley, oats, rye and triticale) and soybeans.
New GoldWing herbicide is a pre-formulated combination of pyraflufen plus MCPA, specifically developed to be added to glyphosate prior to planting pulses. GoldWing is currently registered for use in field peas, cereals and canary seed – additional pulse and industrial oilseed crops are planned for this label after the 2016 growing season.

BlackHawk and GoldWing are formulated to control the toughest herbicide-resistant weeds found in Western Canada including volunteer glyphosate-tolerant canola, and Group 2 and 9 resistant kochia, as well as enhanced activity on tough-to-kill broadleaf weeds such as wild buckwheat and cleavers. BlackHawk and GoldWing deliver elite levels of weed control and enhance growers’ ability to manage herbicide resistance by providing multiple modes of action that do not include Group 2 chemistry.

“Glyphosate alone is not enough to control volunteer canola and kochia, and the risk of new glyphosate-resistant weeds developing in Western Canada is very real,” says Collier. “Growers need to protect the viability of their glyphosate and glyphosate-tolerant crops through the use of effective burndown additives that carry with them a reduced risk of resistance development over current Group 2 options.”

The two new pre-formulations will be available in bulk options – BlackHawk in 320 acre drums and GoldWing in 640 acre drums. “Farmers are always looking for efficiencies in their operations, and our new bulk sizing will work seamlessly with their existing bulk glyphosate usage,” says Roger Rotariu, Western Marketing Manager for Nufarm.

Nufarm is committed to providing additional pre-seed weed management options for Canadian growers for all cropping situations. Along with Conquer™ herbicide, these products will be the core solution for enhanced weed management in Canada.
