The market of biological crop protection in Brazil will register a growth between 15% and 20% in sales in the next years. The projection was released on Nov 10th in São Paulo by the Brazilian Association of Biological Control Companies (ABCBio), an organization that includes the main producers of this industry in the country.

The industry of biological crop protection in Brazil relies on 51 companies holding registrations in the country. There are 118 commercial products released (including 36 emergency products). Of those, 83 are microbiological (fungus, bacteria and viruses) and 35 are macrobiological (parasites, predators and parasitoids). Only in 2015 20 new products were registered, a growth of 135% so far comparing to the average of the last six years.

“The rapid growth of the biological crop protection products is due to the elevated cost for the development of a new one, around US$ 250 million, to the higher demand of the society and also of the regulatory agencies pushing for food without residue and the fact that the biological crop protection, when used alternately with chemical products, allowing an extension of the life of chemical crop protection products,” explained Pedro Faria Jr., president of ABCBio.

Faria Jr. points out other factors for this expressive growth: greater focus on sustainable agriculture; greater resistance of plagues to agrochemicals; limited offer of new molecules by agrochemical producers; expressive technological advance verified in the area of biological agrochemicals with the development of more efficient formulations and more life at the shelf.

According to him, the segment was favored by the recent and serious phytosanitary problems with some crops in Brazil. “The most remarkable example of this situation was the appearance of Helicoverpa armigera, a new plague that cause huge losses to Brazilian farmers and the economically viable control was just accomplished thanks to the introduction of microbiological insecticides and parasitoids at the plague management plan,” commented him.

Leaders of ABCBio highlighted that the decision was taken by the certification organizations to allow the biological protectors to be registered. This allowed them to be used in all crops.

Because of all of these factors, the largest international companies of biological crop protection products have chosen Brazil to host the International Biocontrol Congress. Coordinated by ABCBio, the event is set for the next November 15 to 17 of 2016 in the city of Campinas, state of São Paulo.
