The Brazilian government unleashed recently its "Phytosanitary Border Surveillance Program". The goal of this initiative is to strengthen enforcement - especially with the move of agrochemicals - in the borders with other countries.

The issue is extremely difficult and sensitive to Brazil, mostly because of the big extension of the country's borders, which has 15,735 terrestrial kilometers with ten different countries. Another critical point is the reduced number of enforcement agents available for the job.

A group of servers was created on July 31, and will have to make a report with the full proposal of a program, including project with deadlines and costs, as well as specific normative act draft. Experts or representatives of entities related to the subject both within and outside the ministry, may be invited to participate in developing the project. The group will present the report in the first week of November.

The reinforcement on surveillance was a big promise of the new Agriculture minister, Kátia Abreu, right after she assumed the post. In May, she announced that the program of the " National Agricultural Defense Plan" to strengthen the agricultural defense of the country.

The server group is formed by Jorge Caetano Junior (General Coordinator of Strategic Support); Francisco Basilio Freitas de Souza (Secretary of Crop Protection); Carlos Goulart (Departament of Plant Health); Rodrigo Padovani (Departament of Animal Health); e Marcos Eielson Pinheiro de Sá (General Coordinator of the program).
