BASF recently launched its Comet fungicide for corn crops in the Spanish market. According to BASF, this new product prevents and avoids losses generated by the appearance of diseases and adverse climate conditions.

Comet belongs to the AgCeleng group of BASF products and has a physiological action that increases the photosynthesis and the production of chlorophyll. The company yet claims that Comet is a tool to control diseases such as rust and net blotch. The product was authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Natural Environmental of Spain.

In Spain, the corn areas increased to 1.08 million acres (439,000 hectares) in a scenario of growth of global demand for the cereal. According to BASF 's Alfredo Alameda, the monoculture of corn and no-tillage has increased the risk of infections under drier climates, something that reduces the crop quality.

Italy allowed the use of Comet three years ago. During the launch of Comet in Spain, Vittorio Castagnola, a technical director of a 617 acres corn farm in Italy, revealed that the yields in the property 10% to 15%.
