Goatweed is included list of weeds resistant to herbicides in Brazil‏

The goatweed (Ageratum conyzoides) was included in the list of weeds resistant to herbicides group of ALS inhibitors in Brazil. The measure is a result of a study made by the Mato Grosso Institute of Cotton in partnership with the Federal University of Mato Grosso and the Várzea Grande University Center.

"We've made the first official report of goatweed which is resistant to herbicides of this group, according to International Survey of Herbicide Resistant Weeds - a website maintained thanks to a collaborative effort of experts on weeds of over 80 countries - and to HRAC (an international committee of resistant herbicides)," told the Institute's researcher Edson R. de Andrade Junior.

Since the 2012/13 crop, the Mato Grosso Institute of Cotton, a technological arm of the Mato Grosso Association of Cotton Growers, has developed a project aimed to survey the weeds with resistance to herbicides in cotton areas of Mato Grosso.

The researchers also mentioned an issue coming with genetically-modified varieties resistant to glyphosate, used in cotton areas as well as in corn and soybean field. Repeated applications of the same active ingredient or of active ingredients that have the same action have been the main selective factor of tolerant or resistant weeds, according to Andrade Júnior, who warned the importance of preventive measures with constant monitoring of crop areas and herbicide rotation with different sites of actions.
