The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted a Section 18 emergency use exemption to Texas for the use of Topguard® Fungicide (flutriafol) that permits cotton growers in Texas to use Topguard at planting to control cotton root rot, a devastating disease that can cause direct yield losses of as much as $40 million per year.

“The 2015 season will be the fourth year that Topguard has received the Section 18 in Texas,” says Deneen Sebastian, marketing director for Cheminova, Inc, the maker of Topguard Fungicide.

This emergency use is effective February 1, 2015 and expires on June 30, 2015. Anyone applying Topguard for cotton root rot control must have copy of the Topguard Fungicide Section 18 Exemption label on hand during application.

Section 18 of FIFRA authorizes EPA to allow States to use a pesticide for an unregistered use for a limited time if EPA determines that emergency conditions exist.
