APVMA releases pesticides registration report for 2013-14

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) released that it received 1942 applications for product registration, variation to registration or label approval for pesticide products in 2013–14 ended June 30th, including 248 applications received that were withdrawn or rejected. The total number is 5.8% less than in the previous year (2,062). By the end of 2013–14, approximately 6.5% more applications were still in progress than at the end of the previous year.

The agency completed 1870 applications, 96% within the statutory time frame, which is 6% higher than the original target set by the agency. The average elapsed time for the 20 finalised applications falling into the 13–15-month category is reported as 35.6 months. This figure is heavily influenced by applications for new products that required the generation of additional data during the course of assessment.

The APVMA’s income for 2013–14 was Aus$28.275 million, a decrease of Aus$2.137 million (7.03%) from 2012–13. This decrease is largely due to the returning of Aus $2.0 million to the budget as part of the Better Regulation reform funding agreement. The application fees contributed Aus$5.1 million, levies amounted Aus$17.1 million, and renewal fees Aus$4.8 million. Total operating expenses for 2013–14 were $31.997 million, an increase of $0.693 million (2.21%) from the previous year.
