Moths of Helicoverpa armigera (also known as corn earworm) were just detected on wheat crop in Capão Bonito do Sul, located in the north of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The insect was captured through a trap.

According to the agronomist who monitored the pest, Carlos Dellavalle Filho, the discovery of corn earworm in this region brings warning about the difficulties that can come in the 2014/2015 season. This pest was also recently found on soybean crop at Central Rio Grande in Restinga Seca and Nova Palma.

"The pest monitoring by early detection may allow adequate management, preventing them to develop and easing the control. This works for us as an alert for this new crop 2014/15 (summer) season when we plant soybeans and kidney beans," recommended by the agronomist.

The presence of earworm is added more difficulties faced by wheat growers from southern Brazil. According to the General Chief of Embrapa Trigo, Sergio Roberto Dotto, "the year was catastrophic" for the Northeast of Rio Grande do Sul.

Higher humidity and temperatures provoked the appearance of FBH (Fusarium head blight, 50% of incidence) and the blast fungus - a tough control disease even applying fungicides. "There was an excess of rains at sowing, flowering and the grain filing stage. And the situation became even more complicated because was impossible to enter the field to do pest control," explained by Dotto.
