Last Friday, the president of the Region of La Rioja, Pedro Sanz, inaugurated the new Phytopathology Laboratory with which the seed company Ramiro Arnedo not only expands its facilities in Calahorra, but also takes another step in its on-going commitment to engage in new research, development and innovation programmes for new seed varieties of fruits and vegetables.

The company was founded over 50 years ago by Ramiro Arnedo to supply quality seeds to growers in the Ebro valley, and for two decades it has specialised in the field of horticultural research to add value to agro-food products.

In addition to this new lab in Calahorra, the seed company has two other research centres in Almeria and Murcia and created the company Tecnosem for the pelleting of seeds in order to facilitate the mechanisation of planting.

Ramiro Arnedo has introduced to the market new varieties of lettuce, onion, artichoke, pepper, aubergine and melon, among other products, and four years ago started also marketing organic seeds.

The Government of La Rioja has been supporting for years the investments made by the company through various ADER grants. In this sense, Ramiro Arnedo has received aid amounting to 308,687 Euro.

Phytopathology Laboratory
With the expansion of Calahorra's facilities, Ramiro Arnedo has incorporated the latest technology to be able to assist in the improvement of production cycles and work on obtaining new varieties and rootstocks that confer resistance to diseases by eliminating or reducing the use of pesticides, so that a competitive market advantage can be obtained.

The Laboratory of Phytopathology, where four researchers will be employed, will allow for further progress in research programmes for varietal improvement and for the incorporation of new sources of resistance, mainly in lettuce, but also in peppers and melons.

Ramiro Arnedo has its own farms for seed production and collaborates with specialised companies worldwide. The team checks the response of its seeds before planting and during germination to ensure their quality and properties, especially those that have to do with resistance to diseases.

In Calahorra the firm owns three hectares for open field crops. These facilities include the new laboratory, office and management warehouse. There is also a 4,000 m2 warehouse for the processing, cleaning and packing of seeds, as well as a plant for the pelleting of seeds.
