Bayer has applied to New Zealand EPA to import Poncho Votivo, (clothianidin and Bacillus firmus), for use as a seed treatment in wheat, maize, forage brassicas and grass seed.

Poncho Votivo has B. firmus I-1582 added and a reduced amount of clothianidin when compared to the already approved substance Poncho. B. firmus is a soil-dwelling bacterium that occurs naturally in New Zealand. Research has shown that this bacterium is able to reduce nematode attack on plant roots.

Poncho Votivo will provide the same control of insect pests as Poncho, with the added benefit of protecting from damage caused by nematodes. Replacing Poncho with Poncho Voitivo will lead to a reduction in the amount of clothianidin used in seed treatments. The risks to aquatic organisms, birds and terrestrial vertebrates are very low. The New Zealand EPA call for public comment until November 27th.
