Monsanto released an official statement about a court decision in Brazil that considered legal the charge of royalties over the soybean production with the technology Roundup Ready® (RR). "The decision confirms that Monsanto as well as other biotech companies can continue to develop and introduce new technologies in the country, besides maintaining the royalties system on soybeans", says the company.

The sentence of the Justice Tribunal of Rio Grande do Sul, valid for all the Brazilian territory, rolls back a first instance decision and maintains the charge of 2% of the production value.

According to Monsanto, "the recognition of intellectual property rights is fundamental for innovation, investments and supports for the continuity of new technologies introductions, always aiming to attend the big demand for food".

"The soybean royalties system has an important role in boosting new investments on the soybean crops and, with this, contributing to increase significantly the crop productivity. As a result, the system enabled the development of a new technology for soybeans benefiting farmers, seed companies, cereal experts, and exporters, and others. The productive chain of soybeans has made new investments in Brazil because of the technological evolution of the Brazilian farmer, the strengthening of the institutional framework in Brazil and the respect to the rights of intellectual property", concludes the company.
