Brazil's National Technical Commission of Biosecurity (CTNBio), an agency responsible for the assessment of biosecurity of GMOs in the country, held a public hearing about GM eucalyptus. The goal was to discuss the security and potential benefits of the release of this technology, which is under analysis by the commission since January of 2014.

The GM tree shows approximately 20% increase in productivity compared to conventional varieties, shorter growth period, and increased trunk diameter and height. It was developed by FuturaGene, a biotech firm purchased by Suzano Papel e Celulose.

Biosecurity studies indicate that the new eucalyptus do not impact the environment when compared to a conventional plant. From the environmental standpoint, the technology approval can result in a smaller planted area, reducing the pressure on natural forests.
