The Australia Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has received an application from Murdoch University for the intentional release of genetically modified (GM) wheat.

Murdoch University is seeking approval to conduct a field trial of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genetically modified for improved grain quality. The GM wheat lines contain either of the wheat genes Dx5 and Dy10, or a synthetic hybrid of these genes. The trial is proposed to take place between May 2015 and December 2017 at one site in Western Australia, with maximum area of the trial to be 0.06 hectares per year. The GM wheat will not be used for human food or animal feed. OGTR plans to issue risk assessment and management in December 2014 for public comment and advice.
