Members of the beekeeping co-operative, Pampero Limited, have developed a new treatment called "Aluen CAP" to fight against Varroa mite. The company was formed by technicians of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) in Bordenave, in the Southwest province of Buenos Aires (Argentina).

The Varroa mite attacks the honey bees Apis cerana and Apis mellifera in young and adult stages, greatly affecting their survival. The mite is one of the most serious threats to honey bees, and is usually treated by synthetic products that over time lose efficiency and leave residues in wax and honey.

Aluen CAP is an organic acaricide that allows the elimination of synthetic products application without losing productive potential. Additionally, this product can be used for decades without generating resistance and has a low-cost production.
"Aluen CAP is the only organic formulation which controls Varroa mite. It is effective in hives with large rearing and environmental restrictions," said Agronomist Engineer Elian Tourn, from INTA in Bordenave.

According to Tourn, this acaricide does not require that bees to consume it, so they won’t be poisoned. Also, necessary applications times are decreased from 5 to 1, reducing the consumption of fossil fuels by 20% in beekeeping.
"Aluen CAP" was patented with contributions from the National Institute of Co-Operations and Social economy (Ministry of National Social Development) and Associates.

The beekeeping co-operative Pampero Limited also has the authorization issued by the National Service of Food and Agriculture Sanity and Quality (SENASA), which authorizes the company as a laboratory producer of veterinary products in agreement with Greefmayer S.R.L. There are already advanced efforts for the empowerment of Aluen CAP in SENASA, so the production could be soon allowed.
