Fertilizers delivery increases 7.2% in Brazil

Fertilizers delivered to final consumers weighed 16.24 million tons from January to July of this year in Brazil, which indicates an increase of 7.24% compared with the same period of 2013. In the month of July alone, 3.53 million tons of fertilizers were delivered, resulting in a jump of 8.3% compared to the same period of last year. The data was released by the National Congress of Fertilizers held by the National Association for Fertilizers Promotion (Anda) in São Paulo.
Regionally the first seven months of the year, the state of Mato Grosso remained the lead in deliveries, with 3.426 million tons, followed by Paraná with 2.186 million tons, São Paulo with 1.94 million tons, and Rio Grande do Sul with 1.769 million tons. In terms of NPK nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium), the delivers totaled 6.967 million tons in the period, which means an increase of 7.3% compared to January and July of 2013.
In the case of nitrogen fertilizers, during the first seven months of the year, the increase was 7.9% due to an increase of demand for crops of corn, cotton, coffee, and wheat. The sales of phosphate fertilizers shown a 3.6% increase compared with the same period of last year, provoked by the intensifying deliveries for corn, wheat and soybeans. In the case of potassium fertilizers, there was a growth of 10.3%, with a highlight for the formulated products.
The national production period from January to July of 2014 totaled 4.899 million tons, against 5.437 million tons of 2013, a fall of 9.9%. Reductions were also seen on the production of nitrogen fertilizers by 8.7%, phosphate fertilizers with 9.2% fall, and potassium fertilizers with 9.6% of decline.
The imports of intermediate fertilizers reached 13.238 million tons from January to July of this year, showing an increase of 12.8% compared to 2013, when 11.734 million tons entered through Brazilian ports. The Anda survey pointed out that there was an increase of external purchases of nitrogen fertilizers by 18.3%, phosphate fertilizers 6.3%, and potassium fertilizers 20.3%. In the Paranaguá port, the major entrance of fertilizers, there was a volume of 5.321 million tons (5.2%) imported, which is 40.2% of the total.
