Sucrose to receive EU basic substance approval

EU has approved sucrose as a basic substance for plant protection purpose. The approval is effective from January 1st 2015, and has no expiry date. Sucrose only can be used as basic substance when being an elicitor of the crop's natural defence mechanisms. In April 2013, EU received an application from the Institut Technique de l’ Agriculture Biologique (ITAB) for approval of sucrose as a basic substance for plant protection. The intended uses are against Cydia pomonella L and on sweet maize against Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. The substance is food grade and, despite the limited toxicological data available, it is not expected to give any health concern. The limited application rates is maximum 100 g/ha per treatment.
