EU Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) recently has adopted positive opinions on the approval of  five active ingredients as biocides. They are Mitsui Chemical’s insecticide dinotefuran, and four other existing insecticides: alpha-cypermethrin, Bacillus sphaericus (Bs 2362) and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis strain SA3A (Bti SA3A), and avicide carbon dioxide.

Dinotefuran is intended to be used by professionals in products to control indoor insects and other arthropods including cockroaches. BPC proposes that dinotefuran should be considered as a candidate for substitution, due to very persistent and toxic. There are several other ais intended for use in the same product type that have already been approved. The committee also proposes that product assessment shall pay particular attention to the exposures, the risks and the efficacy linked to any uses covered by the application for authorization.

Alpha-cypermethrin is intended to be used as an insecticide for indoor application by professionals for hard surfaces, crack and crevice treatments and areas behind furnishings applied by low-pressure spraying. Carbon dioxide is intended for professional use to control nuisance birds at airports.

Bs 2362 is used in the control of mosquito larvae in a range of aquatic breeding habitats, such as stagnant and standing ponds, ditchesand sewage settling ponds. The use of Bti SA3A is for the control of mosquito and black fly larvae in contaminated water habitats and filter fly midges in sewage treatment plants.

BPC’s opinion serves as a basis for the decision-making by the European Commission and the Member States.
