The Australian Office of Gene Technology Regulator(OGTR) has recently issued a licence in respect of application DIR 124 from Monsanto Australia, authorising the commercial release of cotton that has been genetically modified (GM) for insect resistance and herbicide tolerance.

The release is authorised to take place throughout Australia. The GM cotton and products derived from the GM cotton would enter general commerce, including use in human food and animal feed. Food Standards Australia New Zealand has approved the use in food of material derived from these GM cottons. Note that cultivation of GM cotton may also be subject to other requirements in some Australian States and Territories for marketing reasons.
