Australia approves Monsanto’s TruFlex canola

The Panel on GMO of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA GMO Panel) recently concluded that glyphosate-tolerant genetically modified oilseed rape MON 88302 is as safe as its conventional counterpart and non-GM commercial oilseed rape varieties. Developed by Monsanto, MON 88302 in EU is for import, processing, and food and feed uses, but excludes cultivation. Therefore, part of the environmental risk assessment conducted by EFSA is concerned with the accidental release of viable MON 88302 seeds during transportation and processing. Monsanto has already introduced MON 88302 under the trade name TruFlexTM Roundup ReadyTM, in US, and Candada for cultivation, in Mexico and Japan for feed uses.
