China to suspend the use of buprofezin in rice

In view of the high-level and extremely high-level resistance of nilaparvata lugens population to buprofezin in rice field, China National Agricultural Technology Service Center has suggested to suspend the use of buprofezin against nilaparvata lugens in rice production provinces and instead to use alternatively the pymetrozine and nitenpyram with different function mechanism to slow down the growing resistance of nilaparvata lugens thus to avoid the impact to rice production caused due to the decreased effect.

In 2013, China National Agricultural Technology Service Center organized relevant research institutes to have measured the resistance of nilaparvata lugens population to buprofezin in 28 locations across 10 provinces in China. The results have revealed 11 locations where the resistance ratio is above 160 which is of extremely high-level resistance and 17 locations where resistance ratio is under 160 which is of high-level resistance.

China National Agricultural Technology Service Center also conducted field test to verify the actual effect of buprofezin against nilaparvata lugens. The results have shown significantly decreased effect, most of rice productions areas have a pest control effect of less than 65%, which appears not effective any more to prevention of nilaparvata lugens.

To this end, China National Agricultural Technology Service Center recently announced its test results of resistance of nilaparvata lugens to buprofezin, stating that nilaparvata lugens is now at high-level resistance or extremely high-level resistance to buprofezin and buprofezin has become inapplicable to prevention of nilaparvata lugens.
