Paraguay coordinator of the Cotton Program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ubaldo Britos, expects to reach 30,000 hectares planted with cotton this year. The activity will employ between 18 and 20 thousand families, according to the Ministry.

The biggest percentage of the planted area will use GMO seeds of the variety Nu OPAL, reported Britos. In this sense, he suggested producers should check with agricultural technicians (Extensión Agraria) from their regions to obtain proper technical support for a better management of both traditional and transgenic cotton.

Britos stated that “the farmer that planted transgenic cotton has to make his first application of herbicide to control weeds and, hence, eliminate competence within the crop.”
