New Zealand approves importing of insecticide containing bifenthrin and imidacloprid![qrcode]()

The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved an application for a new insecticide that contains bifenthrin and imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid.
Ensystex NZ Ltd applied to import the water-based insecticide Bithor, which is intended for use to control ants in and around domestic, industrial and commercial buildings and structures.
The EPA’s expert Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Committee approved the application, but has imposed rules to protect people, animals, and the environment.
The rules include provisions to make sure the product does not enter waterways, and provide for the protection of insects such as bees when Bithor is used.
Bithor labels are required to carry warnings that detail how users should protect themselves and their pets from possible exposure.
This application was assessed through a public process, which included seeking submissions and holding a public hearing in Wellington in July.
