Bahrain-based Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. (GPIC) announced plans to build a US $1 billion fertilizer complex adjacent to its existing facilities in Sitra, Bahrain. GPIC is also meeting with potential partners to discuss investments outside the country, according to Chemical Week.

The new complex, scheduled to come on-line in 2013, will produce 2,200 metric tons (MT) of ammonia per day and 3,500 to 3,600 MT per day of urea. A methanol plant will be added in the project’s second phase.

GPIC's current fertilizer complex has the capacity to produce 400,000 MT per year of ammonia, 600,000 MT per year of urea, and 400,000 MT per year of methanol.
